Curating the Portfolio: Importing Assets
Importing Assets
The CW Data Catalog allows curators to import their metadata using four methods. The recommended method for consistent curation is using the metadata file import function.
Metadata Import
Metadata Import- A metadata file can be uploaded to the data catalog from the user’s computer or from a URL reference to the file. The data catalog recognizes these metadata formats: FGDC CSDGM, ISO 19139, ISO 19115-3, ISO 19115-3 GeoPlatform Profile, RDF (encoded asXML, TTL, JSON-LD, or NT), and POD. Once uploaded, the extracted data will display and can be edited and linked to other assets.
Web Services- Metadata for one or more web services can be imported from a CSV or JSON file from these service types:
  • OGC WMS - http://opengis.net/spec/wms
  • OGC WFS - http://opengis.net/spec/wfs
  • OGC WMTS - http://opengis.net/spec/wmts
  • Esri Map Server - http://www.geoplatform.gov/spec/esri-map-rest
  • Esri Feature Server - http://www.geoplatform.gov/spec/esri-feature-rest
  • Esri Image Server - http://www.geoplatform.gov/spec/esri-image-rest
  • Open API
Extracted services can then be further linked to other assets in the data catalog.
ArcGIS.com and CKAN- Metadata can be imported directly from ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and from CKAN from data.gov. These methods are available for use on the catalog but its recommended to review all records prior to importing to verify they include full and reliable metadata useful for catalog users and curators to connect with other assets.
Other Imported Registry Items
When a metadata file is imported, from ArcPro or Arc Desktop for example, it may bring in related registry items as well, such as: Organizations, Publishers, and Persons. If metadata is not labeled properly with a role, that entry will come in with a label of “un-titled”. It is important to verify that all entries are labeled with an appropriate role title. For example, an agent (contact person or organization) of a Dataset may be listed as an originator or distributor. If no role is listed for that agent in the metadata, the agent will come in as an “un-titled” item with the name of the agent attached. In order to properly connect these items to their related assets, role titles need to be correctly added to those records in the metadata.
Using Exported File from ArcGIS.com
There are multiple ways to add contacts and related contact information into an ArcGIS metadata record. All contacts entered with a role of point of contact in the metadata record will be populated to the Contact Point property in the catalog. All contacts entered with a role of publisher in the metadata file will be populated to the Publisher property in the catalog. All additional contacts with other role types entered in the metadata record will populate to the Attribution property (Located under the Related tab).
